Specifically, the Hohokam of the southern Arizona deserts show both a much longer history of intensive agriculture as well as a better link to Mesoamerican societies further south, both attributes that might be pertinent to their knowledge and also use of astronomy. If proof for that expertise among the Hohokam long precedes that proof at Chaco, this causes fascinating inquiries concerning the origins of Chacoan astronomy. If it does not, that leads to other fascinating inquiries about both cultures. Well, if we purchase Lekson's theory, which I essentially do, what seems to be taking place right here is that the household functions loaded by kivas somewhere else were filled by the huge square rooms at Salmon. Salmon seems to support this idea, in that it obviously was created (as well as inhabited?) by one of these groups instead of the other, whereas at Pueblo Bonito, at least, both seem to have actually existed.
Unlike the southern alignment, nonetheless, it's never clear what that may be. While the precise factors for adoption of this orientation might not be clear, its consistency isn't unexpected given that it's rather apparent and easy to replicate. As I noted above, there are 2 main alignments that linger with time in the San Juan region. http://hectorlkes397.cavandoragh.org/the-skies-in-old-pueblo-society-1 |
